Finding Required Summer Reading at the Library
Finding School-Required Summer Reading Books
The Schaumburg Library serves students in three high schools, six junior highs, and private schools. A separate SUMMER collection is established with many copies of each title for the three local public high schools. The books are purchased as soon as the schools notify the library about selections, which may be late in the school year. In 2013, SUMMER titles were checked out over 2000 times from June-August. It is important to remember that this covers only a percentage of students. We try to meet the needs of as many teens as possible for the entire township with our annual budget.
The schools encourage students to get copies at our libraries, but it is especially difficult when a high school assigns one book or a few books for the entire school to read. Please consider having your teen read books in audiobook or electronic formats available from the library when traveling. Keep in mind also that many families are looking for those assigned books in August before returning to school. At that point, many of the books have reserve lists and will not be available. Reserve your needed books as soon as possible through the catalog on our website or in the library. Some classes may require that students bring the book into school and even mark or highlight the book. In those cases, purchasing a used book from online sources or local resale retailers may be a good option.
