Just Listen
When young,
We often choose not to listen.
When old,
We often lose the choice to listen.
So we tell stories,
The ones not written down.
So others may hear the tales,
But only if they desire.
The elders tell their tales,
As living history books.
Their words musty and yellow,
As the pages are.
But somehow
Oh somehow
Our elders do more than speak of the past,
They can send you back in time.
Young ones tend to daydream,
As the history books share their secrets.
The young have already read their books in class,
Or so they may think.
But somehow
Oh somehow
the elders choose to go on,
Telling of the triumphs and downfalls of long ago.
When young,
We often choose not to listen.
When old,
We often lose the choice to listen.
Now I ask you,
Who will write down their words?
